NATURE PROTECTION AND ACCESS

Playa del Papagayo lies within the protected area of Los Ajaches. Vehicle access is subject to an environmental fee to limit human impact. There are no hotels or developments nearby, preserving the beach’s wild and untouched character.

03

TERRESTRIAL FLORA AND NAME

The coastline hosts protected and endemic species like succulents and hardy grasses adapted to arid conditions. The name “Papagayo” has no confirmed historical origin but has been used orally for generations as part of the local tradition.

05

MARINE LIFE AND SNORKELLING

With calm, shallow waters, Papagayo is a great spot for snorkelling. Among the rocks, colourful fish, sea urchins, and other coastal creatures can be seen. The water’s clarity enhances both the experience and safety for swimmers.

02

GEOLOGÍA Y ORIGEN

The surrounding terrain is shaped by ancient lava flows eroded over millennia by wind and sea. The Los Ajaches area is considered one of the oldest and most geologically significant natural formations on Lanzarote.

04

QUIET COVES AND VIEWS

Beyond the main beach, several small coves remain peaceful even during peak season. A panoramic footpath offers sweeping views of the sea, the rugged coastline, and the nearby island of Fuerteventura on the horizon.

HISTORY AND LANDSCAPE

In the 15th century, Norman conquerors landed in this area during their early attempts to colonise Lanzarote. At sunset, the bay takes on golden-red tones that highlight the volcanic landscape and the natural beauty of the surroundings.
